Overview

Masters by Research in Modern LanguagesThe Institute of Modern Languages Research now offers a new one-year Masters by Research in Modern Languages (French/Francophone, German, Italian, Spanish/Latin American) available for 2015–16. The core course offers a distinctive element of translation theory in addition to research skills and training.

This flexible programme allows in-depth study under the supervision of experts in the field. The dissertation gives the student scope to explore an area of interest in depth and to develop advanced critical and analytical research skills. The student will receive face-to-face supervision and small group specialist research training in a well-established Research Training Programme.

  • Two taught core courses: Translation Theory/Research Skills.
  • „„Dissertation: 25,000 words on a topic of your choice as agreed with your supervisor, written in English or in the language of study.
  • „„Topics: literature; film; cultural memory; women’s writing; exile studies; migrant studies; cultural history; history of ideas; translation studies.
  • „„Areas of study: Europe; the Americas; Caribbean; North Africa.

IMLR supervisors: Professor Catherine Davies; Professor Andrew Hussey; Dr Godela Weiss-Sussex; Dr Katia Pizzi; Dr Dominic Glynn.

Entry requirements: a second class honours degree from a reputable university; native or near native competence in English and the language of study.

Structure

The two compulsory 0.5 core modules are:

1. Translation Theory (0.5, 20 credits) in term 1
2. Research Skills and Methodologies (0.5, 20 credits) in terms 1 & 2

The Dissertation (25,000 words, 140 credits): on a research topic agreed between student and supervisor, supervised with fortnightly meetings. The Dissertation is the research component of the Master’s by Research. The dissertation may be written in the language of study: French, German, Spanish or Italian (subject to staff availability).
